Header Images That Change So Site Pages Show Different Headers
Uploading multiple header images and showing different headers on different pages is easy. Visitors can see headers of different colors with different messages as they visit different pages.
Some of the major news sites on the internet have different headers for different pages. When you click on a news story it jumps to the news story page and the header changes too.
You can also change the size of the header so that it is narrow which provides more space for the site to show “above the fold” on the screen.
Header Design Tips to Remember:
Clean Design: Keep the header clean, uncluttered, easy to read. Content is King as they say. Let the content showing beneath the header be the “star.”
Avoid Busy Graphics: Avoid busy graphics or busy textures. Huge, busy, elaborate headers of the past are no longer the trend, especially due to keeping headers “mobile friendly” for viewing on small screens.
Make the focus on Content Beneath the Simple, Clean Header: Unless photos are an important part of the site concept keep the header simple. For highlighting photos in a header one approach is to use a theme with a header sliding gallery. However, you can also simple install a gallery or slider on a Homepage so it shows beneath the header and “above the fold” on the screen. Even a photography site can have a simple header but with a photo gallery below it. This makes the gallery content into the main focus.
Steps:
Create Headers and Upload
1. First, create a series of custom headers. You might want to start with just a couple and expand it later. For directions to creating custom headers with logos please see the tutorial on that subject. Briefly, use any software program that you wish. One of the easy, free softwares you can use is Picasa. Select images you want to have in the header, go to Create in the menu at the top, choose Create Collage from the drop down menu, choose a length and height for the header (Twenty Twelve will accept different header sizes from the default size), resize and rearrange the images, select a banner size. Create the collage then click it and use the text tools to add the text and format it. Then upload to the header page of your website or blog.
Go to the “Headers” Screen
2. To get to the headers page, in case you are a new wordpress user, go to the Dashboard, then to Appearance and to Headers.
Upload the Headers
3. Under Headers click to browse and upload to upload the header. Initially it uploads and shows on the screen with a dotted line around it. You need to click on the line and drag it to stretch it to include the entire header so it won’t cut part of the header off.
Random Headers
4. Under “Uploaded Images” you will see where it says “Random: Show a different image on each page.”
Select to Show Different Header Images
5. Put a dot in the radio button for the random header images. At this time there is not an option to specifically choose which exact image shows on which exact page but the images will be selected randomly. Click Save.
